A View from the bridge Essay Example for Free
A View from the bridge Essay The play is set in the Red Hook district of New York where a Sicilian community has set up, and where respect is everything. The play is set in the 1940s, in the great depression.à Eddie Carbone is the main character of the play, and one of Arthur Millers main concerns with him is his psychological state of mind. The play concentrates from the first word to the last full stop on the way Eddie clashes with his emotions, as his niece, Catherine, matures into a young woman and constructs a serious relation ship with an illegal immigrant who is staying with them. Arthur Miller was born on October 17th, 1915, in New York. Both of his parents were immigrants, but the family was quiet wealthy because of his fathers successful clothing business, until it was declared bankrupt following the crash at the stock exchange.à Miller then went to work as a warehouseman to earn money to go to the university of Michigan in 1934.à Miller whilst studding, Economics and History also took a course in playwriting and then became his main fixation. After his graduation in 1938, he became a journalist and wrote radio scripts. During World war two Miller worked as a ship fitter for two years, in Brooklyn Navy Ship yard, where almost all the workers were of Italian descendant.à His first stage play to be produced, The Man Who Had All the Luck, was a total failure when it was staged on Broadway in 1944. But in 1947 All My sons was an immense success. This was followed by another great success two years later, Death of a Salesman, this play was such a success it won the Pulitzer Prize. In 1953 he wrote The Crucible, which he wrote as his reaction to the hounding down on left wing sympathizers, which was the current trend in the United States of America, he himself was summoned. A view from the bridge was his next play. It was first produced as a one-act play in 1955, but an extended and modified in 1956 and then was presented at the Comedy Theatre in London.à Also in 1956 he divorced his first wife and married his second wife Marilyn Monroe, which in turn boosted his celebrity status. But this marriage was short lived and a divorce was settled in 1961.à Miller has continued to produce a number of successful plays and has written an autobiography Timebends in 1987.à The play A View from the bridge was thought up by Arthur Miller in the late 1940s, when he became engrossed in the lives and work of longshoremen in New Yorks Brooklyn harbour, and where he had previously worked. A lawyer friend of Millers told him a story he had heard of a longshoreman who had informed the Immigration board on two of his own relatives who were staying with him, he did this to break up an engagement between one of them and his niece.à The story ended inevitably in tragedy with the mans death.à Eddie is portrayed as an honest, hardworking man, however soon into the play his character changes,à and from the very few lines of the play the main character Eddie is trying to protect his niece Catherine from other men and save her for himself:à Catherine: But those guys look at all the girls, you know that. Eddie: You aint all the girls.à This clearly shows that Catherine is very special to Eddie and he will do any thing to protect her.à The further on into the play you go the more it becomes apparent that Eddie is emotionally unstable and is not ready to deal with his inner emotions, he turns out quiet nasty and an overall angry person towards life:à I aint starting nothing, but I aint goanna stand around looking at thatà This aggression is directed at his wife Beatrice and a relative named Rodolpho who at this time has started dating his beloved niece.à The further on in the play Eddie starts to show his anger in other ways, mainly by insulting and talking about Rodolpho behind his back:

Cloning Essay: Cloneco: Life is Our Business -- Argumentative Persuasi
Cloneco: Life is Our Business à On July 5, 1996, Scottish Scientists shocked the world by creating the first successful clone of a sheep.à With the dawn of this new biotechnology, people have begun to question the ethical ramifications of applying this technology to humans.à Many believe that cloning humans is morally wrong.à As a stockholder in Cloneco, I support their use of this scientific discovery.à However, my position to profit from the use of cloning is not the reason that I believe that there is nothing morally wrong with the practice of cloning. à Once Cloneco and other cloning research facilities have performed sufficient research on cloning, the practice of cloning will have many health benefits.à Currently, there are many genetic diseases for which there are no cures.à These include sickle cell anemia, cystic fibrosis and Alzheimer's disease.à Cloning technology could be used to find cures for these genetic diseases in addition to other non-genetic health problems such as heart disease, liver and kidney failure, leukemia and cancer.à à à Opponents of cloning argue that the technology will be used for the pursuit of unethical goals.à They believe that some people will use cloning as a means of becoming immortal by repeatedly cloning themselves or that people would try to replace others with clones.à Despite the fact that it is impossible to create a clone with the same memories as the original, research has proven that it is impossible to make an exact replica of a person even if the replica is physically identical to the original.à This is because the environment in which he is brought up largely affects a person's development.&... ....à This means that they can make the most knowledgeable decisions based on the immense amount of information that they have gathered through research and experience.à In addition, all Cloneco employees from administrative assistants to scientists undergo a rigorous selection process in which background checks comparable to those used by the government's alphabet soup agencies are made to ensure that they will make moral decisions and will not pursue personal interests while working for Cloneco.à à Cloning will usher in a new era in human history as the traditional form of procreation that has stood constant for eras changes.à However, it is important to remember that the purpose of cloning is to create humans, not duplicates.à It is Cloneco's mission to ensure that cloning technology is used responsibly.à Their business is life.

Describe Your Impression Essay
Prior to working in government, I worked in the private sector. In comparison of the two cultures, I realize that politics exist in both cultures and it is a game that I really do not like to play. My impression of the two cultures leave a lot to be desired in the sense that I am one who is not afraid of hard work; I am always committed to the job. However, working in the private sector gave me a greater sense of satisfaction: I could prioritize my work and get things done; there was less bureaucracy. I could determine what was good for the organization, share it with my management who respected what I brought to the table and implement a cohesive strategy that would benefit the organization. Working in government you have to be prepared and committed to the policies that sometime prevent you from completing your job.(i.e. public interference and internal obstacles) in addition to working with people who do not share the same ideals as you. The government mentality of being a paper pusher was a concept that I fight with myself constantly about. My first few years in government, I went above and beyond what was expected of me because I did not like the feeling of being ââ¬Å"unresponsiveâ⬠. Working in government I now see what the mentality is all about. I as an individual am not a paper pusher; I am a results driven hard worker who wants to see the results of my hard work; however, being in government you do not control what gets accomplished by your work ethicââ¬â¢ you only control what is expected of you: meaning ââ¬Å"I do what I am supposed to doâ⬠however what road the journey takes does not depend on me it depends on who is going to benefit from the fruits of my labor. The positive side of the two cultures: Private Sector gives you room to grow based on your commitment to work, There is less beauracy to deal with and most are working toward the same goal. In government, when you are given a task, the positive side is that you know it is for the good of the mass and you can envision the end result.

Continuous Probability Notes Essay
Continuous Probability Notes Essay Continuous Probability Notes Essay Chapter 6: Continuous Probability Distributions Study Modules (PPT presentations): Introduction to Continuous Probability Distributions Normal Probability Distribution Discrete Distributions Excel Tutorial: Computing Normal Probabilities Java Applet: Normal Distribution Areas Normal Approximation to Binomial Probabilities Continuous Random Variables: A continuous random variable can assume ____any value_______________ in an interval on the real line or in a collection of intervals. It is not possible to talk about the probability of the random variable assuming a __specific___________ (P(x=X)=0) value. Instead, we talk about the probability of the random variable assuming a value within a given _____interval_____________________. The probability of the random variable assuming a value within some given interval from x1 to x2 is defined to be the ___area under the graph_______ of the ___probability density function__ between x1 and x2. Three continuous Random Variables will be discussed in this chapter: Uniform Probability Distribution, Normal Probability Distribution, and Exponential Probability Distribution. I. Uniform Probability Distribution A random variable is uniformly distributed whenever the ____probability__________ is proportional to the intervalââ¬â¢s length. The uniform probability ___________________________ is: where: a = smallest value the variable can assume b = largest value the variable can assume Expected Value of x: E(x) = ______________________________ Variance of x: Var(x) = ______________________________ Example: Slaterââ¬â¢s Buffet: Slater customers are charged for the amount of salad they take. Sampling suggests that the amount of salad taken is uniformly distributed between 5 ounces and 15 ounces. Therefore: The amount salad customer taken is an uniform distributed random variable with density function: f(x) = 1/10, for 5 âⰠ¤ x âⰠ¤ 15 = 0, elsewhere Where: x= salad plate filling weight Expected Value of x: E(x) = (a+b)/2 = __à µ (mean)_________________ Variance of x: Var(x) = (b-a)2/12 = __ ÃÆ'_(standard deviation)______________ Area as a Measure of Probability: The area under the graph of f(x) and probability are identical. This is valid for all continuous random variables. The probability that x takes on a value between some lower value x1 and some higher value x2 can be found by computing the area under the graph of f(x) over the interval from x1 to x2. II. Normal Probability Distribution The normal probability distribution is the most important distribution for describing a continuous random variable. It is widely used in statistical inference. It has been used in a wide variety of applications including: Heights of people Test scores Rainfall amounts Scientific measurements Abraham de Moivre, a French mathematician, published The Doctrine of Chances in 1733. He derived the normal distribution. Standard Normal Probability Distribution: A random variable having a normal distribution with a mean of _____ and a standard deviation of ____ is said to have a standard normal probability distribution. Converting to the Standard Normal Distribution: z = ____ (X - à ¼) / ÃÆ' ______________________________________ We can think of z as a measure of the number of standard deviations x is from à µ. Rid your Vocabulary of Business Slang!
Rid your Vocabulary of Business Slang! Itââ¬â¢s a logical tendency to use business slang for workplace interactions- youââ¬â¢re seeing the same people and having the same meetings, so obvious clichà ©s creep in from time to time. Here are a bunch you should work to eliminate. ââ¬Å"Drink the Kool-Aidâ⬠Iââ¬â¢m guessing what you mean here is ââ¬Å"convinceâ⬠because even cults probably find this clichà © distasteful by this point.ââ¬Å"Break down the silosâ⬠Are you a farmer trying to get your harvest consolidated? No? Find another metaphor.ââ¬Å"It is what it is.â⬠Gertrude Stein would say ââ¬Å"There is no there there,â⬠but this literally means nothing.à ââ¬Å"Do more with less.â⬠Double down on trite and add a dollop of vagueness for this one. Be specific! Be measurable! Be meaningful!ââ¬Å"Tee it up.â⬠Ah the sports metaphor. Youââ¬â¢re not fooling anyone with that tiny putting green- this is work, not golf. Even ââ¬Å"cue it upâ⬠is less contrived. Ditto: â⠬Å"Par for the course.â⬠ââ¬Å"Take it offline.â⬠Unless youââ¬â¢re having a conversation in an email you soon intend to continue à over the phone or in someoneââ¬â¢s office (and remember to be precise about when), a meeting is not ââ¬Å"onlineâ⬠so having a different meeting is not ââ¬Å"offlineâ⬠. Similarlyââ¬Å"Letââ¬â¢s circle backâ⬠à and ââ¬Å"This is a hard stopâ⬠- say what you mean without resorting to dusty, imprecise phrases.ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s a paradigm shift.â⬠Do any of your employees know what a paradigm is? Are you really introducing a new model or pattern? If so, why not just introduce the new thing? This is a placeholder for a real idea.ââ¬Å"We canââ¬â¢t boil the ocean.â⬠â⬠¦.what? Why? Climate change concerns aside, how is this helpful? What insight is it meant to provoke?ââ¬Å"Low-hanging fruitâ⬠If you were a customer, would you want to be visualized this way?à ââ¬Å"Out of pocketâ⬠We pay for things out of our pockets because thatââ¬â¢s where our wallets are. If what you mean is ââ¬Å"out of officeâ⬠or ââ¬Å"unavailableâ⬠â⬠¦why wouldnââ¬â¢t you just say that?ââ¬Å"Move the needle.â⬠Are you a geologist? One who studies earthquakes?ââ¬Å"Bite the bullet.â⬠Think of retiring this one as your contribution to dismantling gun rhetoric in the United States. It refers to the practice of biting a bullet in lieu of having anesthesia during surgery. How is this something you want emulated in your workplace?ââ¬Å"Run it up the flagpole.â⬠Is it possible you mean ââ¬Å"testâ⬠or ââ¬Å"try outâ⬠or ââ¬Å"send to a focus group? Would you actually learn anything from suspending your idea in the air? How many ways to wave are there, really?ââ¬Å"On the cutting edgeâ⬠I feel like The Sharper Image took this phrase down- even the newest most exciting technology isnââ¬â¢t really ââ¬Å"on the cutting edgeâ⬠anymore.ââ¬Å "Think outside the box.â⬠Yawn. Thinking inside the box would be more surprising than a corporate supervisor bringing this one out of mothballs.ââ¬Å"Peel back the layers of the onion.â⬠Maybe itââ¬â¢s getting close to lunch time, but either way swap this one out for ââ¬Å"Take a closer look.â⬠Delete ââ¬Å"drill down,â⬠ââ¬Å"unpack,â⬠and ââ¬Å"double-clickâ⬠from your repertoire too.ââ¬Å"Synergizeâ⬠This one makes me cringe because what you mean is ââ¬Å"synthesizeâ⬠with an overlay of technobabble.Iââ¬â¢m making a separate category for phrases reality TV has murdered:ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t throw him/her under the bus.â⬠ââ¬Å"Take it to the next level.â⬠ââ¬Å"If/When push comes to shove.â⬠ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m not here to make friendsâ⬠(Okay, probably nobody says that last one at work but itââ¬â¢s my very favorite reality trope.)And lastly, the one I have the most personal investment in- stop using workplace â⠬Å"catchphrasesâ⬠that have an offensive or appropriative meanings! My mom is one of two American Indian employees in her office, and still occasionally hears ââ¬Å"Letââ¬â¢s pow-wow about this laterâ⬠and ââ¬Å"She really went off the rez.â⬠You are having a meeting. A MEETING. You can tell because itââ¬â¢s in a conference room and not in a sacred ceremonial space accompanied by drumming and other traditional rituals. And as for ââ¬Å"off the rez,â⬠à ââ¬Å"going outside of expectationsâ⬠is not the same as ââ¬Å"escaping from the forced housing communities your people were driven to after years of exploitation and genocide,â⬠if you really think about it.Also throw on this pile of outdated and offensive phrases, ââ¬Å"indian giver,â⬠ââ¬Å"open the kimono,â⬠ââ¬Å"gypped,â⬠ââ¬Å"chink in the armor,â⬠ââ¬Å"peanut gallery.â⬠If you donââ¬â¢t know why, look it up. Calculating the Mean Absolute Deviation
Calculating the Mean Absolute Deviation There are many measurements of spread or dispersion in statistics. Although the range and standard deviation are most commonly used, there are other ways to quantify dispersion.Ã We will look at how to calculate the mean absolute deviation for a data set.Ã Definition We begin with the definition of the mean absolute deviation, which is also referred to as the average absolute deviation. The formula displayed with this article is the formal definition of the mean absolute deviation. It may make more sense to consider this formula as a process, or series of steps, that we can use to obtain our statistic. We start with an average, or measurement of the center, of a data set, which we will denote by m.Ã Next, we find how much each of the data values deviates from m.Ã This means that we take the difference between each of the data values and m.Ã After this, we take the absolute value of each of the difference from the previous step. In other words, we drop any negative signs for any of the differences.Ã The reason for doing this is that there are positive and negative deviations from m.Ã If we do not figure out a way to eliminate the negative signs, all of the deviations will cancel one another out if we add them together. Now we add together all of these absolute values. Finally, we divide this sum by n, which is the total number of data values.Ã The result is the mean absolute deviation. Variations There are several variations for the above process.Ã Note that we did not specify exactly what m is. The reason for this is that we could use a variety of statistics for m.Ã Typically this is the center of our data set, and so any of the measurements of central tendency can be used. The most common statistical measurements of the center of a data set are the mean, median and the mode.Ã Thus any of these could be used as m in the calculation of the mean absolute deviation. This is why it is common to refer to the mean absolute deviation about the mean or the mean absolute deviation about the median. We will see several examples of this. Example:Ã Mean Absolute Deviation About the Mean Suppose that we start with the following data set: 1, 2, 2, 3, 5, 7, 7, 7, 7, 9. The mean of this data set is 5.Ã The following table will organize our work in calculating the mean absolute deviation about the mean.Ã Data Value Deviation from mean Absolute Value of Deviation 1 1 - 5 = -4 |-4| = 4 2 2 - 5 = -3 |-3| = 3 2 2 - 5 = -3 |-3| = 3 3 3 - 5 = -2 |-2| = 2 5 5 - 5 = 0 |0| = 0 7 7 - 5 = 2 |2| = 2 7 7 - 5 = 2 |2| = 2 7 7 - 5 = 2 |2| = 2 7 7 - 5 = 2 |2| = 2 9 9 - 5 = 4 |4| = 4 Total of Absolute Deviations: 24 We now divide this sum by 10, since there are a total of ten data values.Ã The mean absolute deviation about the mean is 24/10 2.4. Example:Ã Mean Absolute Deviation About the Mean Now we start with a different data set: 1, 1, 4, 5, 5, 5, 5, 7, 7, 10. Just like the previous data set, the mean of this data set is 5.Ã Data Value Deviation from mean Absolute Value of Deviation 1 1 - 5 = -4 |-4| = 4 1 1 - 5 = -4 |-4| = 4 4 4 - 5 = -1 |-1| = 1 5 5 - 5 = 0 |0| = 0 5 5 - 5 = 0 |0| = 0 5 5 - 5 = 0 |0| = 0 5 5 - 5 = 0 |0| = 0 7 7 - 5 = 2 |2| = 2 7 7 - 5 = 2 |2| = 2 10 10 - 5 = 5 |5| = 5 Total of Absolute Deviations: 18 Thus the mean absolute deviation about the mean is 18/10 1.8.Ã We compare this result to the first example.Ã Although the mean was identical for each of these examples, the data in the first example was more spread out. We see from these two examples that the mean absolute deviation from the first example is greater than the mean absolute deviation from the second example. The greater the mean absolute deviation, the greater the dispersion of our data. Example:Ã Mean Absolute Deviation About the Median Start with the same data set as the first example: 1, 2, 2, 3, 5, 7, 7, 7, 7, 9. The median of the data set is 6.Ã In the following table,Ã we show the details of the calculation of the mean absolute deviation about the median. Data Value Deviation from median Absolute Value of Deviation 1 1 - 6 = -5 |-5| = 5 2 2 - 6 = -4 |-4| = 4 2 2 - 6 = -4 |-4| = 4 3 3 - 6 = -3 |-3| = 3 5 5 - 6 = -1 |-1| = 1 7 7 - 6 = 1 |1| = 1 7 7 - 6 = 1 |1| = 1 7 7 - 6 = 1 |1| = 1 7 7 - 6 = 1 |1| = 1 9 9 - 6 = 3 |3| = 3 Total of Absolute Deviations: 24 Again we divide the total by 10 and obtain a mean average deviation about the median as 24/10 2.4. Example:Ã Mean Absolute Deviation About the Median Start with the same data set as before: 1, 2, 2, 3, 5, 7, 7, 7, 7, 9. This time we find the mode of this data set to be 7.Ã In the following table,Ã we show the details of the calculation of the mean absolute deviation about the mode. Data Deviation from mode Absolute Value of Deviation 1 1 - 7 = -6 |-5| = 6 2 2 - 7 = -5 |-5| = 5 2 2 - 7 = -5 |-5| = 5 3 3 - 7 = -4 |-4| = 4 5 5 - 7 = -2 |-2| = 2 7 7 - 7 = 0 |0| = 0 7 7 - 7 = 0 |0| = 0 7 7 - 7 = 0 |0| = 0 7 7 - 7 = 0 |0| = 0 9 9 - 7 = 2 |2| = 2 Total of Absolute Deviations: 22 We divide the sum of the absolute deviations and see that we have a mean absolute deviation about the mode of 22/10 2.2. Fast Facts There are a few basic properties concerning mean absolute deviations The mean absolute deviation about the median is always less than or equal to the mean absolute deviation about the mean. The standard deviation is greater than or equal to the mean absolute deviation about the mean. The mean absolute deviation is sometimes abbreviated by MAD.Ã Unfortunately, this can be ambiguous as MAD may alternately refer to the median absolute deviation. The mean absolute deviation for a normal distribution is approximately 0.8 times the size of the standard deviation. Common Uses The mean absolute deviation has a few applications.Ã The first application is that this statistic may be used to teach some of the ideas behind the standard deviation. The mean absolute deviation about the mean is much easier to calculate than the standard deviation. It does not require us to square the deviations, and we do not need to find a square root at the end of our calculation. Furthermore, the mean absolute deviation is more intuitively connected to the spread of the data set than what the standard deviation is. This is why the mean absolute deviation is sometimes taught first, before introducing the standard deviation. Some have gone so far as to argue that the standard deviation should be replaced by the mean absolute deviation.Ã Although the standard deviation is important for scientific and mathematical applications, it is not as intuitive as the mean absolute deviation. For day-to-day applications, the mean absolute deviation is a more tangible way to measure how spread out data are.
